He watched her disappear up the stairs. Having her back still hadn’t quite righted itself in his brain. Part of him wanted to stay holed up in the bedroom with her in case she disappeared again. The rest of him wanted to play for her and show off what he could do, perform all the songs he’d written for her. The woman she’d become suited him. God help him, could he give his heart to her all over again?

“I never expected to see you with another woman, John.” Allie smothered a laugh behind her hand. “I’m honestly thrilled. She’s cute. Didn’t she work here?”

“She’s been around.” He chuckled. Allison Carmichael didn’t look like she belonged in a rock band. Even during a sound check, she dressed like she was about to go into the office. All crisp white button-downs and knee-length skirts. Today she wore a T-shirt and jeans. He crooked one brow. “You’re not in your standard attire. Are you doing something kinky for Adam?”

“Yeah. Kink.” Allie rolled her eyes. “I thought I’d try a change.” She tugged her T-shirt down a little. “Speaking of changes, you’ve been in a funk for a long time. When you get quiet, we worry. But I see you’re smiling, so that’s a positive. She’s permanent, I hope?”

“I’m not sure about permanent, but things are looking up, Al.” He threw his arm around her shoulders and ambled into the main room of the bar. “I’ve got an idea for a new song and it’s not depressing.”

Allie stopped short and wriggled out of his arm. “No shit?”

John came to a stop two steps in front of her. “No shit, although I can’t believe I heard that word come from your mouth. Adam will spank you so hard.”

“Don’t tell everyone our secret.” She closed the gap one step. “Did you clone Felicity or is this chick a damned good copy? Or are you actually living a little?”

“Sometimes even the best can be improved. But I’ll ignore the living a little comment. I’ve lived…pretty okay for the past few years.” He winked. “Let’s go. I’ll bet Adam’s getting twitchy to play so you two can make your own music in the dressing room.”

He clapped his hands when he reached the stage. “You ready to make some magic?”

Adam’s dark brows rose. Jesse frowned. Tony, for his part, didn’t change his expression. “You’ve been drinking again, haven’t you?” he asked. “I’m telling you, getting drunk won’t help any of us play better.”

“Never said it would, and no, I haven’t fallen off the wagon. I had a Coke a couple hours earlier, but that’s it.” John grabbed his guitar and slung the guitar strap up over his head. “I haven’t had a drink in over two years and I’m not about to start now. I’ve got a new lease on life.” He strummed a few notes. “So are we ready?”

“Yeah,” Adam and Jesse said in unison.

“I’m ready.” Tony stepped in close. “Did you tell Keagan to go to hell? Please tell me you unloaded him as a partner.
